Shaping of a Servant
The Odyssey of a Family is the story of the family into which I was born.

Shaping of a Servant: The Odyssey of a Family is the story of the family into which I was born. I reflect on the stream of events that God used to bring my parents together from two distinctly different countries and cultures, leading them to establish a loving Christian home. As my story emerges out of their story, I review my growing years, highlighting the circumstances and adventures that shaped me.

The Story of Mohammed Mussa

God Speaks to a Shepherd Boy
Mohammed Mussa was born in a rural part of northeast Ethiopia dominated by Muslims…

Mohammed Mussa was born in a rural part of northeast Ethiopia dominated by Muslims. He found fulfilment in his early years shepherding farm animals, but even as he grew and was instructed in the ways of Islam, he was traumatized by a violent father who dominated him, his mother, and siblings.
As his childhood wore on, he began to wrestle with questions some might think were too weighty for a child: Does God really exist? And if he does, is he as stern and cruel as our religion leads us to believe? Can we truly know Him? Should we even try?
Eventually his path led to a Mennonite mission school where he began to learn about the Bible and the Christian faith. But his father commanded him to let the “teaching from that Catholic book go in one ear and out the other,” and for years he dutifully obeyed.
Until one day as a teenager he heard the voice of God speak directly to his mind and heart … and it wasn’t a voice demanding obedience, but a voice that conveyed ultimate love and sacrifice! Mohammed’s amazing encounter with Christ changed the direction of his life 180 degrees, and he immediately began to share his newfound faith with all around him. The years ahead held serious opposition, from Muslim family and friends, from a Communist regime that overthrew the government of Ethiopia and treated all Christians as agents of the CIA, and from the world’s most devastating famine which occurred near Ethiopia’s northern border in the mid-80s. In the meantime, God provided an education and a gift for linguistics and impressed upon Mohammed that even though he was trapped in a Communist country, someday he would be freed to share the Gospel of Jesus with people throughout the world … even in his home country among hundreds of thousands of fellow Muslims!
This is the story of the founder of Mohammed Mussa Ministries. God has protected him through deep grief and heartbreak, near-death experiences and near-impossible escapes, and has allowed him to witness miracles of dramatic physical, mental and spiritual healing as thousands have come to know the grace and mercy of the One who saved him, through his preaching and training of indigenous evangelists.
